1) The Yahrtzeit of Rabbi Dovber of Mezeritch, "The Mezeritcher Maggid" (5533 - 1772).
2) The day that Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, "The Alter Rebbe ," (a close disciple of the Maggid,) was released from jail in 5559 - 1798. He was jailed based on slanderous charges that he was attempting to overthrow the Czar (!?).
This day is celebrated annually as the Rosh Hashonoh of Chassidism.
